The 1895 Project, Inc.
About The 1895 Project
The 1st documented African American Debutante Ball was hosted in New Orleans, LA, in 1895. The tradition was started to celebrate African Americans’ upward mobility through education, networking, and community outreach. Historically organized by churches and Social organizations (i.e., the Links, Jack & Jill, etc.), the 1895 Project hopes to return to this rich tradition with modern additions!
Like Debutante Balls of the past, we want to highlight our Debutante’s educational achievements but also help round their focus as they prepare for life beyond high school. We know that our youth have many interests, and we want to make sure we’re celebrating those achievements, too.
Applicants for the 1895 Project Debutante Ball will be selected based on the following criteria and interview process (in person if permissible):
- Academics
- Community Service
- Extra Curricular Activities
- Misc. Life Activities, etc.
The 1895 Project looks at ALL of our applicants holistically and with compassion for life’s circumstances.
Our Mission
To preserve and restore the values of the debutante balls & cotillions in the southern African American tradition. In the spirit of current times, the 1895 Project looks to foster the development of education, career, life, and social skills for Black, Brown, and Indigenous (BIPOC) persons.
The 1895 Project believes in community engagement & Support. We commit to working/partnering with local nonprofits, community based organizations, and small businesses to deliver CORE aspects of our Debutante training. Once selected, each Debutante will participate in our three month skills building activities/workshops presented by our 1895 Project Community Partners. These trainings will concentrate on life & career mastery.
We’re excited for all that’s to come. But we need your help! We need Nonprofit/Community Organization Partners, Leaders, THINKERS, Sponsors, and Resources to make this happen.
We know we can do this TOGETHER.
